One of the most valuable lessons one learns in an educational setting is how to do research. Until recently this invariably involved access to libraries and printed materials. These were accessed through card catalogs and the Dewey Decimal System. Now you may use a search engine for the same purpose, the difference being data retrieved with NO loss of trees.
For many towns in America, the railroads were vital to success, and Portland was no exception. Periodicals from across the country were distributed by rail and thus to the depot newsstand that became a Sunday destination for us on a regular basis. These formed the basis for further research on history tour destinations. Sadly, many great publications did not survive digital transformation.
