Rocky Mountain States
Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado
Once a barrier to passage, the Rockies are now a destination.
The Yellowstone hot spot took millions of years to cross Idaho from the Virgin Valley in Nevada. Your visit will not take that long although time is rewarded in that regard.
Salt lakes and the fault block mountains that create them are common in the American west and the greatest salt lake of all is in Utah. The spectacular geology in the rest of the state makes up for it though.
Until mineral prospectors took an interest, Wyoming and Colorado were mostly regarded as hostile territory to be crossed with caution. The near extermination of bison herds and the natives that coexisted with them put an end to that.
